How does masking work?

Masking is one of the most essential concepts in Photoshop and it is the foundation to work non-destructively with layers. Although it is a simple concept it is difficult to understand. Whenever I teach beginners to use Photoshop I always tell them to think of the mask as a black paper with a white hole in it. You can only see through the white hole. I hope this example will help you to understand masking and remember the way it works.

Photoshop for Beginners VII – Retouching images

There are several retouch tools in Photoshop and you can use them effectively on any images from portraits to landscapes. You only need to learn how to work with them properly. In this section we will go through the 3 basic retouch tools: Clone Stamp tool, Healing Brush tool, Spot Healing Brush tool and we will also discuss how to use the Liquify filter properly for more complicated retouch scenarios. Finally I would also like to share a special technique for adding shadows and highlights to an image completely nondestructively.

In this tutorial you can learn some very useful keyboard shortcuts to edit type in Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. These shortcuts will help you to speed up your work and to edit your text more precisely. In this tutorial I show examples in InDesign, but most of the shortcuts I mention also work in the other two applications.

You can learn keyboard shortcuts for the most commonly used text editing options like changing size, font, kerning, tracking, leading, paragraph alignment, baseline shift, style, capitalisation, hyphenation etc.
